"Laziness is especially damning in the age of social media. Never before have PR professionals had such an enormous opportunity to custom tailor pitches to journalists, bloggers, and content creators, who are most likely flocking to sharing sites online. With a few minutes of simple due diligence on a pitch recipient, which means dipping into Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, an email message is easily customizable to become more relevant and personal (i.e. PR professionals can suggest the media platform that might be a good fit for the story, and why the story is a good fit for the reporter). There are times when a quick intro and pitch on Twitter, Facebook, or LinkedIn is the best way to reach out. Starting conversations—rather than just relentlessly pitching stories—on social streams can help you establish relationships with writers you’d like to cover your stories, which may make them more open to future pitches."
— Amber Mac, 3 Tips for PR Pros Using Social Media (agreed!)

Great timing on this article as I just returned from a panel on new media and tourism for travel industry pros. The biggest tips from this morning’s Social Media Week panel were transparency and collaboration. I think PR agencies, especially when it comes to social media, lose focus of their core task which is to talk to people. When you represent a client/brand/company, it’s important to establish and promote true connections, not just sell them what you think they want to hear. Be honest, encourage interaction, and learn from your audience’s response. So in the world of consumer-driven media, you have to let go of a bit of control and embrace that to improve and grow your client/brand/company’s vision.

Above is my full response to PR Week’s topic: PR agencies must adapt online or die.

Though I work primarily in social media, I truly believe the core of my work stems from my background and passion for public relations. Somehow, over the years, through the rise of digital media, I think PR pros have forgotten their purpose.

I’ll be sharing PR tips for Freelancers and Entrepreneurs with Virtual Work Team. Ask questions!
