#FOCUS100 is tomorrow!
We’re excited! We’re pumped! We’re dedicated! The #FOCUS100 symposium is where tech startups led by black women can connect with industry innovators, brand managers, and digital influencers. The event consists of a half-day pitch bootcamp, followed by a full-day symposium featuring panels, valuable mentorship sessions and a pitch competition with top angel investors and VCs. #FOCUS100 is October 5-6th in New York City.
Conference Prep:
Bring your laptop/iPad/smartphone and chargers. There will be power strips! Bring a copy of your pitch deck for print and electronic. Come prepared with questions for your mentors and an open mind to receive constructive feedback.
Eat And Meet:
Join me at the closing cocktail reception on Saturday evening, sponsored by BlogHer and Ogilvy.
Ask Mayor Cory Booker A Question!
We’re working with Waywire to solicit questions for Mayor Cory Booker from #FOCUS100 attendees. Just download the app, or go the site and upload your video and tag it #FOCUS100.

If there’s an upcoming event you want to attend but it’s sold out, try emailing the event host to sign up as a volunteer. Most likely you’ll attend the event for free and you’ll directly meet the event organizers – who probably rock!

I’ve been volunteering at Daniel Delaney’s #brisketlab, a pop-up style BBQ brisket club that is an underground hit. For the five hours that I volunteered at one event I got free drinks, ½ lb of brisket, and a voucher for free brisket at future event. Score!

There’s a meet-up group for everyone out there. I like branching out and finding meet-ups based on discussions happening online. Browse Tumblr, Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter for events in your location according to relevant keywords (example: I love the #beforebreakfast tag) to find your perfect group.
But if you can’t find a group to your liking, start one up yourself.

I recently started a chapter of #likemindbk, a coffee + conversation group with people who are creative, entrepreneurial, and friendly. Come join us at our next meeting on August 17, 2012 at 8:00am in Brooklyn.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this month’s Bed-Stuy Crawl! Another huge success for us Brooklynites, and especially the local community that has supported this idea each time we do it.
Bed-Stuy Crawl has reached some impressive numbers that my team - Clay Williams, Nicole Taylor, and I - are very excited and proud about. Take a look:
We’ve received a ton of positive feedback and are incredibly pleased to know that Bed-Stuy is getting some love and introduced to new people by these curated food and drink experiences.
Til next time (maybe June?),
Cheers!
February’s sold out Bed-Stuy bar crawl reached nearly 20,000 people on Twitter through 50 tweets (via #bedstuycrawl), over 300 Facebook clicks, 1,700 Eventbrite page views, and over 40 attendees throughout the evening. In addition, there were mentions in the New York Times Diner’s Journal, New York Magazine’s Grub Street blog, Scoutmob newsletter, Brooklyn Exposed events and 15 other online publications.
Due to popular demand, we are excited to extend the Bed-Stuy Crawl series to other corners of the neighborhood. Regularly, we’ll be curating an experience introducing new audiences to our beloved community.
April’s Bed-Stuy Crawl is on Sat., April 14th - tickets are on sale now!

Get down on winter eating and happy hour drinking at local watering holes, making Bed-Stuy more than just the home of rap legends. “Food mayor” Nicole Taylor of FoodCulturist.com (with my help) will introduce you to a corner of Bed-Stuy where a number of new restaurants and bars are popping up featuring global cuisine at affordable prices, and unbeatable experiences.

I am brainstorming a series of events starting next month that allows me to dig my vast set of skills and connect with more, new audiences. I’d like to expand my consulting to speaking engagements and interactive events, Skillshare being one of the best social platforms out there to do so.
Recall my last event’s topic: Transitioning into Entrepreneurship with WECREATENYC. One of the most eye-opening events of my career, I knew I wanted to continue to create a landscape for myself and peers to discuss the many challenges and successes we face today. With this in mind, I’d love to stretch the idea of self-employment into other topics of discussion whether it’s how to become an Internet curator for your business, to managing your monthly budget, or following the proper protocol for starting an active social media presence. I bet there are some basic questions people have been wanting to ask but just don’t have the time to dive in, so I’m giving you all that chance.
Got a Skillshare class idea for me? I’m all ears!
